How to Deal with Your Dog's Separation Anxiety

The new atmosphere and lifestyle from moving homes can be a reason for separation anxiety in your dog. While it won't be an overnight process, here are three tips to help your dog feel safer in their new homes.

Keep old routines

If your dog is used to being fed, pet, or walked at a certain time, try to maintain that. The more consistent their schedule is through the move, the better for your dog's mental health. Keeping familiar items like their favorite toys, furniture, or even the same laundry detergent for old smells as a great way to show that the new space is now rightfully occupied by you and your dog.

Don't leave them alone for awhile

The most effective symbol of safety and well-being for your dog is you! Spending as much time with them through the transition is a great way to help ease your dog's nerves. If you leave for most of the day, try getting a neighbor, roommate, friend, or hired sitter to check in on your pal while you're gone. Seeing other familiar faces can be a deterrent for unconventional behavior.

Be patient

Moving into a new home can be daunting to humans and dogs alike. Ease the transition by creating an air of familiarity, being present with your dog as often as possible, and remembering that restoring their mental health will be a process. Let them know that the new space rightfully belongs to you and downplay the transition by keeping as much of your old routines as possible. If more serious, persistent behavior occurs then contact your vet to explore more intensive options.
